His last ton was in Test arena, against New Zealand in November 2021. Iyer’s innings on Day 1 was aggression and timing on a masterclass scale. He hammered his first century in just 101 balls and ended the day on 152 after smashing 18 boundaries and four sixes. While Iyer was till then going great guns, his partner, Siddhesh Lad, anchored the innings with great composure. In fact, Lad’s patient knock of 116* from 234 balls ensured Mumbai’s dominance over Odisha.

He had smashed a record 22 fours and eight sixes, but this was not just another impressive knock for the India star cricketer. It was the first double century for Iyer in First-Class cricket and the first Ranji Trophy double ton since October 2015.
