In a shocking incident, a 43-year-old Bengaluru woman has been duped of Rs 8.21 lakh in cyber fraud case. The woman was looking for companionship on a matrimonial site and ended up losing huge amount of money to a fraudster posing as a marine engineer, Prajavani reported.
The victim, resided with her family in Mylasandra in Bengaluru’s Kengeri. She had registered on Shaadi.com in April to find a life partner. She received marriage proposal from a man named Ajay Agarwal on April 12, who claimed to be a marine engineer.
The woman accepted his proposal after believing his credentials and conversation on WhatsApp.
How Did The Man Trap Her?
Following the acceptance, Ajay started narrating his stories to her. He said that he was on a ship traveling from the United States to Mumbai. He messaged the woman on May 22 and narrated a story about dramatic attack that forced his ship to dock at a nearby report.
He then requested the woman to receive his belonging in India, supposedly sent through a logistics company. The woman believed his story and provided her address to him. Following that, she received a call from someone posing as a logistics representative. The caller demanded Rs 2.63 lakh as administrative and registration fees for delivering the documents.
She transferred the money after Ajay assured her the money would be repaid. However, the demands didn’t stop and the woman was asked to pay additional sum under different pretexts, this included custom fees also. The sum in total amounted to Rs 8.21 lakh. The payments were done through multiple installments from the woman’s and her family member’s accounts.
The victim realized she was duped after the man stopped responding to her texts. She filed complaint with the cybercrime police on 8 November.
