The substantial earnings of top Indian cricketers, generated from various sources, always spark significant interest among fans, especially considering that cricket has been the most popular sport in India since the 1983 World Cup victory. In addition to their income from playing the game—boosted exponentially by the launch of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008—endorsement deals further enhance a player’s brand value. The more prominent the star, the larger the endorsement deal.
With such massive earnings, the taxes these stars pay to the government naturally rise as well. According to a report in Fortune India, batting legend Virat Kohli tops the list of not only cricketers but also Indian sports figures who have paid the highest taxes for the financial year 2023-24.
Kohli, who is currently on a break and vacationing with his family in London, has reportedly paid Rs 66 crore in taxes. He is followed by MS Dhoni, who paid Rs 38 crore, and Sachin Tendulkar, who contributed Rs 28 crore, completing the top three cricketers on the list.
The list of top celebrity taxpayers, as published by Fortune India, also includes Sourav Ganguly, who paid Rs 23 crore in taxes, and Hardik Pandya, who paid Rs 13 crore.
