The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials approached the US authorities for visa assistance to the family members of an Indian student who got critically injured in a road accident in California and slipped into a coma. The family members applied for a visa within 48 hours of the mishap, which had taken place on February 14.
According to a report published in NDTV, Neelam Shinde is a student at California State University. She was hit by a four-wheeler from behind on February 14. The family member applied for a visa, but the application is still pending.
Now, sources told NDTV that after the MEA’s America division reached out to the US authorities for assistance, the family members may be granted visas anytime soon. As per norms, the US visa is quickly processed in case of medical emergencies.
Shinde sustained severe injuries, including fractures, after being hit by a four-wheeler. The student’s family said that brain surgery has to be performed on Neelam, and the hospital sought permission from them. Neelam’s legs and hands got fractured.
NCP MP Supriya Sule highlighted the incident and urged the MEA to intervene and get it resolved.
In a post on X, Supriya Sule stated, “Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance. Requesting Hon. @DrSJaishankar Ji, @meaMADAD, and @IndianEmbassyUS to kindly look into the matter and help.”
