Delhi Police Launches ‘Shishtachar’ To Boost Women’s Safety In The Capital – Key Details Inside! News24 –
The Delhi Police has decided to set up ‘anti-eve teasing squads’ in the city to respond quickly and stop sexual harassment. The squads will focus on following the law, not personal or cultural beliefs.
Formation Of ‘Shistachar Squads’
Named as ‘Shistachar Squads,’ these teams will work like Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Romeo Squad. They will also make sure victims are not embarrassed or judged by others, and their main goals are “prevention, help, and support for victims.”
Police Commissioner’s Order
“The squad must focus on enforcing the law, rather than imposing personal or cultural morality on individuals. Victims should be protected from unnecessary public scrutiny or embarrassment,” says the Police Commissioner, Sanjay Arora’s order.
Squad Structure And Composition
Each district will have two squads, with one Inspector, one Sub-Inspector, and eight Constables and Head Constables, including four women officers in each squad. The government has said that the officers chosen for these squads should be picked carefully, making sure they are kind, understanding, and motivated.
Focus On Vulnerable Areas
The police will identify and make a list of dangerous areas in the city where women’s safety is at risk. These areas will be the main focus of the squads.
Daily Operations Of The Squads
“The squad should routinely move around in vulnerable areas and conduct drives in at least two vulnerable points every day. They should rotate across these points systematically, ensuring complete coverage of all such areas in their jurisdiction over a period of time. The squads will operate with a multi-faceted approach involving prevention, intervention, and victim assistance,” the order, dated March 15, mentioned.
Use Of Plainclothes Female Officers
Female police officers in plain clothes will be sent to these areas to spot and stop offenders. Each team will have cars and motorcycles to respond quickly.
Community Collaboration And Public Transport Checks
Squad members will also check public transport, encourage victims to report their complaints, and work with volunteers, resident associations, and citizen groups to find dangerous areas.
Reporting And Oversight
The squads will also need to send a weekly report about their work to senior officers. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Against Women) will be in charge of overseeing their work.
