At least 12 people were killed in a plane crash in Honduras. The incident took place when a small plane carrying passengers crashed into the sea after taking off from a Caribbean island, Roatan.
According to reports, the aircraft of Lanhsa Airlines was going to La Ceiba took a sharp turn and plunged into the sea water. An eyewitness told a television channel that it felt like the aircraft fell on him while he was fishing.
The fire department officials rescued five people, but one person was missing. Honduran musician Aurelio Martínez was among the dead.
The report cited that the plane was carrying 15 passengers, two pilots, and a flight attendant. A French passenger was transported to a hospital located in San Pedro Sula for treatment. The fire department officials suspected that an apparent mechanical failure caused the incident.
Xiomara Castro, Honduran President, said the emergency response team was activated to launch the rescue operations. The officials have continued search operations to trace out the missing passenger.
