Bengaluru: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old badminton coach has been arrested for raping a 16-year-old student in Bengaluru. The coach raped the girl on the pretext of providing extra training sessions. The incident came to light during the victim’s visit to her grandmother, who discovered an explicit image of the girl on her phone. The victim had recently completed her Class 10 examinations and had gone to see her grandmother.
It was reported that the girl sent an explicit image of herself to the coach from her grandmother’s phone. After the photo was discovered, her grandmother immediately informed her parents. Upon confrontation by her mother, the girl revealed that the coach had been sexually abusing her under the guise of offering additional training sessions. The girl had enrolled at a sports centre two years ago.
In the investigation, it was found that coach lived alone in Bengaluru. He allegedly took the girl to his residence on multiple occasions and sexually assaulted her. The accused further cautioned the girl form complaining to anyone.
What Did Police Say?
Following the complaint of victim’s mother, the coach was arrested and sent to seven-day police custody for further investigation. The police have filed a case under multiple sections of the Information Technology Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against the accused. The reports added that the coach has confessed to his actions during initial questioning by the police.
Several nude photos and videos of at least 8 girls were found on the phone of the accused. TOI quoted a senior office police officer who stated, “When we checked his phone, we found nude photos and videos of seven to eight other girls, all aged 13-16 years, who took training at the same sports centre. He appears to be a habitual offender who has been targeting minor girls.”
Further investigation into the case is underway.
