Match Fixing Again Haunts BCCI! Imposes Life-Time Ban On Mumbai T20 League Team Owner

In a strict action against cricket corruption, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has handed out a lifetime ban to Gurmeet Singh Bhamrah, owner of Mumbai T20 League team, for being culpable of attempting to fix a match.

The decision came from BCCI Ombudsman Justice Arun Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, who stated that incidents of match-fixing strike at the heart of the sport’s integrity and must be dealt with firmly.

The punishment, the harshest under BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Code, was imposed following a detailed investigation.

The issue dates from the second season of the Mumbai T20 League, during a semi-final match played in May 2019. In compliance with the Ombudsman’s directive, Bhamrah was alleged to have tried to fix the match by meeting a player before the match. The player, however, reported the approach to the authorities concerned, resulting in an investigation.

A BCCI Anti-Corruption Bureau investigation found Bhamrah guilty and the matter was then referred to the Ombudsman. In his judgment, Justice Mishra outlined the reasons for the judgment, emphasizing the nature of the offense and the need to protect the image of the game.

It has also been revealed that Bhamrah had business interests in other Indian leagues of cricket outside of India, including Canada and raising broader questions about the scope and reach of such corruption.
