Is India Next?

It is reported that Starlink is on the verge of securing its final regulatory clearance to launch satellite communication services in India. IN-SPACe, the nodal body under the Department of Space (DoS), is expected to grant approval for the commercial rollout of its satellite broadband services.

“Broadly, the approval for satellite will be given to Starlink as the ministries of home and external affairs which are the key decision-makers on matters of security and geopolitical situation – have already approved the company’s proposal at the department of telecom (DoT),” TOI reported quoting a top source.

After starting its services in Bhutan, Musk’s company had applied for a license in India. Musk had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to Washington DC. It is expected that soon Starlink will start its services in India. Notably, Starlink’s launch in India has been delayed due to the regulatory challenges in India. Elon Musk had earlier dismissed the reports of the internet service being available in India. He said, “Starlink satellite beams are turned off over India”

What Is Starlink?

SpaceX, a company founded by Elon Musk, introduced a new technology called Starlink. Starlink refers to the internet connectivity through satellite. Unlike the traditional internet services which works on optical fibre cables, this new technology uses satellite orbiting around the earth. Due to this, Starlink is more feasible option for rural areas. Laying cables all around is impractical and hefty task. However, Starlink promises to provide fast internet speed ranging around 50 mbps to 150 mbps which suitable for streaming, video conferencing and gaming etc.
