Chandigarh: Newlywed Woman Dies By Suicide In Her Matrimonial Home

Chandigarh: In a shocking incident that took place in Sector 56 in Chandigarh, a 27-year-old woman was reportedly found dead in her matrimonial home late Friday evening. According to reports, the woman, a resident of Badhmajra village in Mohali, was harassed for dowry. She was married on April 16 to a man residing in Sector 56. The woman’s family alleged that she was tortured mentally and physically for a long time by her in-laws, including her husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law

In a complaint filed by her brother, it was mentioned that she often confided in her aunt and siblings about the abuse inflicted upon her by her husband, after consuming alcohol. Hindustan Times quoted him as saying, “They used to tell her that we didn’t give enough in the wedding, and they could have found a better match.”

He further alleged that his sister told her aunt that it was her household matter and that they, her in-laws, would harass her even more if she intervened. Reports added that she texted her brother around 7.30 pm on May 16, inviting him for a conversation. He, along with his younger brother, visited her sister and mother-in-law, and assured them “whatever demands were lacking would be fulfilled.”

After the discussion, the woman left for her room upstairs, saying she needed some rest as she was tired. The brothers asked the mother-in-law to call her before leaving the house, but later returned in panic after finding her hanging from the ceiling fan. The woman was immediately rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead by the doctors. What’s even worse is that the husband did not assist the brothers when they asked her for his help. A case under Section 80 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered in the matter, and an investigation is underway.
