BMW Group To Use Natural Fibre Composites In It Future Lineup! New Carbon Fibre Replacement? News24 –
Following its ode to go sustainable BMW is now planning to harness natural fibre composites for its production models. The BMW group has developed a series of natural fibre composites following several years of development and in – depth research. The composites developed by BMW using the organic matter have been able to meet the stringent demands of roof structures in homologation tests.
The lightweight composites developed out of flax-based components have been developed in collaboration with Bcomp, a Swiss cleantech company. The partnership with Bcomp would further help the brand reduce its CO2e emissions in Future. The Munich based carmaker holds a stake in Bcomp through BMW i ventures, the company’s venture capital arm.
Reduced CO2 Emissions
The use of natural fibers with reduced CO2 emissions and carbon footprint has become increasingly important. Tests have showcased that these composites have great suitability for visible interior and exterior components.
Replacing the usual carbon fibre parts with these natural fibre composite materials across the BMW group’s upcoming portfolio would lead to reduced CO2 emissions. Reports suggest that this would result in about a 40% reduction in overall emissions.
These parts have already showcased their profound strength, being used by BMW M motorsport in the 2019 season Formula E. Since then similarly manufactured parts have also been used on BMW M4 DTM and M4 GT4 , replacing the usual Carbon Fibre part. Since 2022 BMW has become an official partner for BMW m motorsport for the BMW M4 Gt4.
Since these parts would be used on the BMW GT4 24-hour race on the Nürburgring, they would be tested for their tenacity to withstand impacts and mechanical fatigue. The parts from BMW M Motorsport Bcomp would now be used in future BMW M series vehicles aswell.
