An Investigation Into This Matter Is Ongoing
A 24-year-old man has been accused of murdering his live-in girlfriend after slitting her throat with a knife last month because she would not marry him. The alleged murderer was arrested by Mira Road police on June 14.
According to police, the alleged murderer, Samshuddin Mohammed Hafiz, was a chef at a five-star hotel in Mumbai; while his girlfriend, 19-year-old Kareena Ali, was a singer at a bar in Dahisar. The couple had been arguing about marriage with Kareena wanting to finish her career before her marriage.
“She (Kareena) and I were talking about marriage for a few days and at first we began arguing about it,” Kareena’s brother Imran Ali told police. He related that the couple had been together for 2 years and had been living in a MHADA flat for about a year.
“She had said she wanted to earn money before getting married,” Imran explained to police, “but a few days before this incident, they were arguing almost every day.”
Hafiz had supposedly accused Kareena of cheating and threatened to break up with her. When Kareena did not respond to Hafiz’s accusations, Hafiz left – before returning hours later. According to reports, Imran and a cousin of his had witnessed Hafiz hitting Kareena and tried to intervene.
A confrontation ensued with Hafiz turning violent and attacking both Imran and his cousin. Hafiz produced a knife during the fight, which he used to slit Kareena’s throat, before fleeing the scene. Imran hurriedly took his sister to the hospital. Doctors determined that Kareena had passed away. Imran then called the Mira Road police to report the fight.
Eventually, Hafiz was arrested and charged with the murder under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
