About Pride and Prejudice

‘Pride and Prejudice’ is Jane Austen’s second novel, which was published in 1813. It is considered one of the most loved books in English literature and has been adapted into movies and shows several times. The themes of wealth, class, status, and marriage have been mentioned throughout the novel.

The story revolves around the five Bennet sisters, whose mother wants them to marry into a rich family to secure their future. The novel’s opening line perfectly describes its theme: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” The plot mainly centres around Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, who initially hold prejudices against each other but soon fall in love.

‘Pride and Prejudice’ reportedly got its first adaptation into a television show in 1938. However, the 1995 mini television series, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, is one of the most popular adaptations. Later, Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen’s 2005 film also gained huge popularity and is considered a cult classic.

The novel also received its Indian adaptation with Aishwarya Rai’s 2004 film ‘Bride & Prejudice’ and Star Plus’s show ‘Kahiin Toh Hoga’.
