A NIA Special Court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused in connection with the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The NIA court said the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt. All seven people have been acquitted of all charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms act and all other charges.
Sadhvi Pragya Thakur was granted bail in the case earlier, as she consistently denied allegations of involvement in the blast. Let’s take a look at who Pragya Singh Thakur is and the cases associated with her.
Who Is Pragya Singh Thakur?
Sadhvi Pragya was a former BJP MP from Bhopal. She was also an activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). After college, she joined different affiliated organisations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Accused In Malegaon bomb blast
The Malegaon bomb blast took place in 2008, and the police arrested Thakur in connection with the case. It was alleged that the bike used in this blast belonged to Pragya Singh Thakur. As a result, she was arrested on charges of terrorism. However, the court later granted her bail on health grounds.
Murder Case Of RSS Leader
Notably, RSS pracharak Sunil Joshi was murdered on 29 December 2007. The police arrested a man from Rajasthan in connection with the case. Around the same time, seven people, including Sadhvi Pragya, were accused of involvement in the murder. However, in February 2017, the court acquitted all the accused due to lack of evidence.
Diagnosed With Cancer
In 2008, it was reported that Pragya Thakur was detected with breast cancer, for which she had undergone treatment at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Dr. SS Rajput, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon of this institute, highlighted a statement in 2008, that Pragya Thakur had a mastectomy as a part of her cancer treatment. She underwent two major operations to cure breast cancer. Along with this, Dr. SS Rajput criticised the statement that cow urine and Panchagavya cure cancer.
