Bengalureans Rejoice As Namma Metro’s Yellow Line Set To Open In Mid-August After Years Of Delay News24 –
Bengaluru: Commuters eagerly await the launch of Namma Metro’s 19.15-kilometre Yellow Line, connecting Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road (R.V. Road) in South Bengaluru to Bommasandra in the Southeast. Originally slated for a 2021 opening, the line has faced repeated delays, missing its latest target of June 2025. With all safety protocols now cleared, the Yellow Line is set to be inaugurated in the second week of August 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Namma Yellow Line. However, official confirmation is yet to be released.
The Metro:
The first phase of Namma Metro’s 19.15-kilometer Yellow Line will initially operate three trains, expected to serve 25,000 passengers daily. Full operation, with 15 trains serving 200,000 passengers daily, is expected to begin by 2026.
There will be 16 metro stations from R.V. Road to Bommasandra on the Yellow Line. The Yellow Line will start from the Green Line at R.V. Road and connect with the Pink and Blue Lines at Silk Board and Jayadeva Hospital.
Who Will Benefit?
The Yellow Line of Namma Metro will benefit commuters travelling from R.V. Road to Bommasandra via Silk Board. This will reduce congestion in these areas and enhance connectivity for the Pink and Blue Lines as well.
The Silk Board Junction in Bengaluru remains a significant congestion hotspot. In 2024, a 5.12-kilometre flyover from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board, featuring multiple loops and ramps, was constructed to ease traffic congestion. Despite this, the junction’s traffic woes persist, as vehicles from all directions continue to converge, leaving congestion largely unchanged.
The 21-kilometer route by road from R.V. Road to Bommasandra takes nearly an hour, but metro commuters will cover it in less than an hour.
The 16 Stations:
The Yellow Line comprises 16 strategically located metro stations designed to serve key neighborhoods and meet commuter needs in Bengaluru. Starting with R.V. Road, an interchange station with the Green Line, it enhances overall metro connectivity. The line includes Jayadeva Hospital, catering to patients and medical staff, and B.T.M. Layout, serving a densely populated residential area. Silk Board provides relief at a notorious traffic junction, while H.S.R. Layout connects a major IT and residential hub. Oxford College offers convenience for students and staff, and Muneshwara Nagar improves access to surrounding localities.
Central Silk Board is a critical stop for tech sector office-goers, while Bommanahalli links a rapidly growing housing area. Hongasandra connects industrial and residential clusters, and Kudlu Gate enhances access to smaller industrial estates. Singasandra serves both residents and commercial areas, while Basapura caters to local neighborhoods. Hosa Road supports workers in emerging IT spaces, and Electronic City Phase 1 is vital for thousands employed in the tech park. The line terminates at Bommasandra, connecting industrial zones with residential communities.
Namma Metro Trial Video:
A video of a Namma Metro trial run went viral on social media. It showed six coaches moving slowly while traffic flowed alongside on adjacent roads.
Why The Yellow Line Is Important:
It will significantly decongest the area and boost public transport. Former Joint Commissioner of Traffic, M.N. Anucheth, has indicated several times that Bengaluru needs better connectivity. He said in a podcast that there are 1.23 crore registered vehicles in the district, and the IT hub also lacks public transport compared to Mumbai and Delhi.
The Update:
The final stage, which included the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) inspection, began on July 22 and concluded a few days before. During the inspection, the CMRS evaluated tracks, fire safety protocols, entry and exit points, and the operational readiness of the driverless train.
An official said, “Following the CMRS survey, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will need two weeks to incorporate any safety and operational recommendations. After completing the recommendations, the Yellow Line will begin operations by mid-August.”
What Residents Say
With the Metro inauguration approaching, Bengaluru commuters are thrilled and eagerly anticipating the Yellow Line’s launch. “We have been waiting for the yellow line for over five years. Hope this time the announcement is real and it starts running next month as they have been saying,” said K Bhavani, a resident of Basapura near the Hosa Road signal.
“There goes my commute time saver. Open the Yellow Line soon, please,” said Tarun Yadav on X while posting a video of a Yellow Line trial.
