In disappointing news for football fans across Kerala and the rest of India, Argentina’s national football team, led by the iconic Lionel Messi, will not be visiting Kerala later this year as previously hoped.
Kerala’s Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman confirmed the development on Monday, August 4, putting an end to weeks of speculation and growing excitement among fans. Earlier, the State Government had confidently announced that the reigning world champions would travel to Kerala, with Messi at the forefront, possibly in October or November 2025.
The announcement had set the hearts of fans racing, with many dreaming of seeing Messi and Argentina play live on Indian soil – an unprecedented moment in the country’s football history.
Agreement Hit a Dead End
Minister Abdurahiman revealed that while a sponsor had already paid the match fee to facilitate Argentina’s visit, complications arose over the scheduling.
“The Argentine team informed us that they were facing difficulties making the visit in October,” the Minister told reporters.
“However, the sponsor made it clear that they were only interested in hosting the match in October – not at any other time.”
This scheduling mismatch appears to have led to the cancellation of the event, at least for now.
Why October?
While the Argentine team preferred to push the visit to a later date – likely due to a congested international calendar or logistical challenges – the event sponsor insisted on an October-only window, possibly due to commercial commitments or broadcasting rights already locked in for that time frame.
Earlier statements by Minister Abdurahiman had hinted at the team’s visit taking place in either October or November, with the Kerala government fully prepared to treat the Argentina contingent as State guests, covering all costs related to security, accommodation, and facilities.
Fans Left Heartbroken
The announcement has understandably left thousands of Indian football fans – especially Messi supporters – heartbroken. Many had already begun planning travel to Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram in the hope of watching Messi live, potentially for the last time before his international retirement.
Social media was flooded with emotional reactions, with hashtags like #MessiInKerala and #ArgentinaIndiaTour trending just days before the cancellation news broke.
Is There Still Hope?
While no new date has been confirmed, Minister Abdurahiman hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Argentina visiting later in the year or in 2026 – if a mutually agreeable time can be found and sponsor terms are renegotiated.
