Asia Cup 2025 T20I: Only Two Captains Have Led India So Far

The Asia Cup has always been a stage for fierce rivalries and memorable performances. While it traditionally followed the ODI format, the T20 version made its debut in 2016, aligning with the global rise of the shortest format.

Now, with the Asia Cup 2025 set to begin on September 9, fans are eagerly waiting to see which Indian star will lead the side this time.

A Short but Exclusive List of Captains

India has featured in the T20 Asia Cup only twice so far – first in 2016 and then in 2022. And surprisingly, just two players have ever captained the team in this format of the tournament.

MS Dhoni (2016)

When the first-ever T20 Asia Cup took place in 2016, it was none other than MS Dhoni who led India. With his calm head and finishing prowess, Dhoni guided India to an unbeaten run and lifted the trophy — making the perfect start to India’s T20 Asia Cup journey.

Rohit Sharma (2022)

Fast forward six years to 2022, and Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy reins. Known for his tactical sharpness and aggressive batting, Rohit led India in a fiercely contested edition. While India didn’t manage to win the title, his leadership was instrumental in shaping the team’s T20 approach.

A New Chapter Awaits

So far, the T20 Asia Cup captaincy list for India has just these two names – MS Dhoni (2016) and Rohit Sharma (2022). With the Asia Cup 2025 just around the corner, the big question is – will we see Suryakumar Yadav to defend the title or will a new name join this elite club?

One thing’s for sure – starting September 9, all eyes will be on who carries the responsibility of leading India in yet another high-stakes continental showdown.
