The global diplomatic stage is all set to witness one of the most significant annual gatherings in September 2025. World leaders are scheduled to arrive for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York City starting September 23. Among the key political figures expected to attend is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is likely to meet President Donald Trump during his visit to the United States next month, the Indian Express reported.
The UNGA session will kick off on September 9, but heads of state and government will meet from September 23 to 29. While the primary reason for the potential Modi-Trump meeting in New York is to attend the session, the main objective is expected to be talks aimed at resolving ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. PM Modi is also expected to engage in important discussions with several foreign leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The relationship between India and the United States has been under strain due to escalating trade and tariff tensions in recent months. On August 7, the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, followed by another 25% set to take effect on August 27. News of Modi’s possible trip to New York comes after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed. Trump has penalised India for maintaining high tariffs and continuing to buy Russian oil.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that various large trade agreements are still waiting to be completed, including those with India and Switzerland. He further added that the South Asian country had been “a bit recalcitrant” in its negotiations with the United States.
If the Modi-Trump meeting materialises, it will be the second between the two leaders in seven months. Trump hosted a bilateral meeting with PM Modi on February 13, 2025, in the East Room.
