The Lakshmi Vilas Palace, also known as Baroda Palace, is considered the world’s most expensive private residence, valued at Rs 25,000 crore. This extraordinary home of the Gaekwad royals, the former rulers of Vadodara (then Baroda) in Gujarat, is four times larger than Britain’s Buckingham Palace.

The maharani of the erstwhile Baroda princely state embodied her legacy by wearing a stunning 100-year-old pink Paithani silk saree for designer Vaishali Shadangule. Sharing glimpses on Instagram, she unveiled the rich history behind this cherished garment, proving that some treasures only grow more beautiful with time. She wore a breathtaking 100-year-old antique silk Paithani saree in vibrant pink. In an Instagram post, Radhikaraje shared photos and revealed the fascinating history behind the saree.

“This Handloom Day I finally got to fulfil that word as I walked in Vaishali’s most recent show, aptly titled Naad, the sound of the loom. We teamed the label’s signature corded blouse with an antique silk Paithani from our family collection.” She wrote on Insta

She added, “Exactly 40 years ago, in 1985, this very saree was last seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Met Gala exhibition on Royal India, curated by the legendary Indian antiquarian Martand Singh at the behest of curator Diana Vreeland. It has since been rolled up and tenderly kept away. Over the decades this beautiful textile has seen many signs of the maker, the middlemen, the wearer and, of course, age. Happy to share its journey from a remote Maharashtra village to a New York museum, the boudoir of a palace to a Delhi runway with you all.”

The Paithani saree was named after the town of Paithan near Aurangabad in Maharashtra, which is a piece of living history. Celebrated in ancient Buddhist and Hindu texts as Dev Vastra, or “divine fabric,” is originally made with silk from China and handwoven with real gold threads.

Even Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia, one of Asia’s most luxurious homes, is smaller compared to this palace. Part of the palace is open to tourists for Rs. 150, with the museum inside available for an additional Rs. 60. Interestingly, a red light is switched on whenever the Maharaja is present in the palace, signalling his presence.
