‘Takhta Palat’ In ODI Captaincy

Shreyas Iyer might not be part of India’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad, but his cricketing journey seems to be heading towards something much bigger. According to inside reports, the stylish right-hander is being considered as the next ODI captain once Rohit Sharma steps aside.

Why Iyer is the Front-Runner

Over the past four years, Iyer has quietly built an impressive ODI resume. Between 2021 and 2025, he has averaged over 45, notched up 14 half-centuries, and delivered when it mattered most – including crucial knocks during India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy campaigns.

More importantly, he has solved India’s long-standing No.4 puzzle, a spot that had troubled the team for years. His ability to anchor an innings while accelerating when required makes him one of the most dependable batters in the format.

Leadership Experience to Back It Up

Captaincy isn’t new to Iyer. He led Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, lifted the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and took Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Former players often praise his calm presence, ability to guide youngsters, and knack for making smart tactical calls.

The Road Ahead

Rohit Sharma has not yet spoken about his ODI retirement, but with the 2027 World Cup cycle approaching, the selectors appear to be planning a smooth transition. If things go as expected, Iyer could be the face of India’s next era in ODI cricket.
