Beas River Overflows, Vaishno Devi Yatra Halted News24 –

Local shops and homes were swept away, buildings collapsed, highways were lost, and several residential areas flooding deactivated as rainfall brought floods, and rivers overflowed (particularly the River Beas) in Manali, Himachal Pradesh.

On Tuesday, the River Beas came raging through Manali, sweeping away a multi-storey hotel and four shops. With the river raging current, Alu Ground was flooded, the Manali-Leh highway was blocked on several points, and the officials said hundreds of residents are stranded at multiple locations, and without connectivity and power.

A two-story structure in Bahang was taken by floodwaters, while two restaurants along with two shops, also collapsed. Many other areas reported substantial damage, but thankfully, there were no fatalities.

A heavy-duty truck full of goods was swept away by rushing water while trying to drive through it, and video footage taken later showed no sign of the truck.

The Leh–Manali Highway has been closed for all types of vehicular movement until further orders and has had portions washed away along the stretch between Kullu and Manali.

The sudden rise of the Beas River caused water to enter several homes in Patlikuhal while water washed away a fish farm and a factory. Goods washed away from the block factory in Patlikuhal were later seen floating in different areas. Water from Ghanvi Khud also entered homes in Kullu.

As heavy rainfall continued to batter Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, the yatra to the Hindu shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi was temporarily suspended until further notice. The India Meteorological Department also issued a red alert for the Union Territory.
