The festivities that were supposed to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic first-ever IPL title on June 4, 2025, became a tragedy when a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 people and injured several others.
On Saturday, the current IPL champions announced an amount of Rs 25 lakh for each of the families of the victims, as part of a new initiative titled “RCB Cares”.

Tragedy Strikes Amid Euphoria
A day after their title-winning victory over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad, the team came back to Bengaluru for what was to be a grand welcome. But the elation soon turned into mayhem when a huge crowd – estimated to be almost two-and-a-half lakh strong – surged around the stadium.
A victory parade meant to be one of joy turned into tragedy, leaving behind images of sorrow and shock.
RCB Breaks Silence with Emotional Message
Weeks after going quiet to create room for mourning, RCB put up a heartfelt post on social media, recognizing the loss and the financial support.
“Our hearts were shattered on June 4, 2025. We lost eleven members of the RCB family. They were part of us. Part of what makes our city, our community & our team unique. Their absence will echo in the memories of each one of us,” the franchise stated.
The statement also read:
“No amount of support can ever fill the space they’ve left behind. But as a first step, and with the deepest respect, RCB has extended Rs 25 lakh each to their families. Not just as financial aid, but as a promise of compassion, unity, and ongoing care.”
RCB Cares: A Commitment Beyond Compensation
The squad has introduced RCB Cares, a sustainable initiative to pay tributes to the late ones while vowing continued support and constructive action for the bereaved families.
In another post, the franchise spoke to its die-hard fans, the “12th Man Army”, and said:
“Silence wasn’t absence, it was grief. We’ve been hearing, learning, and now we come back to this place not with celebration but with care. To stand with you. To walk forward, together.”
A Celebration Forever Tainted by Loss
The June 4 tragedy has indelibly marked RCB’s historic IPL victory. Although the franchise has committed itself to going on honouring the victims of that fateful day, the event also serves as a reminder of crowd control and safety protocols during large sporting events.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru is in mourning, while RCB sets its sights on ensuring that such a grim episode never repeats itself.
