As Bihar gears up for its state elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana’ has sparked a wave of excitement across social media. The Chief Minister has struck a chord with to woo women voters. Under the scheme, women will receive ₹10,000 as an initial instalment to kickstart their entrepreneurial journey or secure employment opportunities. However, there are some conditions regarding eligibility.

Who Can Apply?

Nitish Kumar had announced this scheme on social media on August 29 and also got approval from the cabinet. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said that every woman from 2.7 crore families of the state will be linked to this scheme. This will not only provide employment to women but will also strengthen the rural economy.

Under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, any woman aspiring to start her own venture can apply for a loan. To participate, women must join a Jeevika Self-Help Group (SHG). Each eligible woman will receive an initial ₹10,000 to launch her employment journey. After six months, those demonstrating business progress can apply for an additional loan of up to ₹2 lakh to further grow their ventures. Haat bazaars will be developed in villages and cities for the sale of women’s products.

What Kind Of Start-Ups Will Get Money?

The state government has identified certain businesses for the first phase of the Chief Minister Women Employment Scheme. The list includes 18 types of work, and women engaged in these businesses will receive financial assistance of Rs 10,000 under the scheme.

1.34 crore women are associated with Jeevika

Jeevika Didi Yojana, run by the Bihar Rural Livelihood Promotion Committee (BRLPS), was launched in 2006 with support from the World Bank. Currently, 10.81 lakh self-help groups are active in the state, with 1.34 crore women members. These groups help women increase their income through agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, grocery shops, sewing, embroidery, and small businesses. Recently, Jeevika Nidhi Credit Cooperative Union Limited was established under this scheme to provide women with low-interest loans, similar to those offered by banks.
