Shubman Gill is in line to become India’s next ODI skipper, with reports indicating that the move has already been finalized and only needs a formal announcement. Since Gill was appointed India’s T20I vice-captain, rumors have been rife that the selectors viewed him as the natural heir to Rohit Sharma in the 50-over game.
Rohit’s long-term future as captain has only become a topic of concern, the upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia set to be his last as skipper, if not his last ODI appearance in general. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, the BCCI choice committee would want to give the job to Gill now and allow him sufficient time to get comfortable in his role and construct a solid side.
As reported in RevSportz, Gill’s selection is certain – it’s merely a question of when the board gives it the seal of approval. Rohit, on his side, indicated he wants to carry on playing in the ODI formation and pursue another World Cup in two years’ time, but ultimately the decision will be made by the selectors. It will take only exceptional performances in Australia to make him stay on as captain.
Compounding the issue is the fact that not many ODI fixtures are lined up ahead of 2027, and there are doubts as to whether senior cricketers such as Rohit and Virat Kohli, who has retired from T20Is and Tests will be able to stay cutting-edge and consistent.
Today, Gill is already the captain of the Test team and has also replaced Axar Patel as vice-captain of India in T20I. With Suryakumar Yadav becoming 34 years old, the T20I baton will also pass to Gill after the 2026 T20 World Cup, and he becomes the top candidate to be the all-format captain of India.
The “one captain in all formats” system has served India well previously, and the selectors seem set to go back on that plan. At the time of the 2027 World Cup, Rohit Sharma will be 40, and as he is only used in one format, it might prove to be a challenge to sustain his primary-level fitness and touch.
