D Gukesh has found himself in a very struggling position as he faced his third consecutive defeat at the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025. This time the loss came against 16-year old Turkish prodigy Ediz Gurel in round 7. The 19-year old Indian Grand master has already faced two losses before – against Abhimanyu Mishra and Nikolas Theodorou.
The match against Gurel was very serious and intense, both the players looked in a very complicated position in the middle of the game. Gurel made a slight blunder on move 27 but the game remained sharp and both players traded queens on move 29. But Gukesh went downhill quickly after move 40 as he committed a big error. Just two moves later, he sacrificed a bishop for two pawns and the decision completely back fired on Gukesh and he eventually lost.
The moment World Champion Gukesh resigned — his third loss in a row, this time against GM Ediz Gürel from Türkiye.

After the defeat, Gukesh was absolutely devastated as he held his head in hands and numb. After a moment he extended his hand to Gurel, conceded the game which was also third loss in a row.
Gurel on the other hand was pretty happy after the win – “It was a crazy tough game.” he said.
“I was pretty happy to see the pairings. It’s always great to play the world champion, whether I lose or not. yeah, he’s not doing so well in this tournament, but I believe he can just pull things through. He’s a great player, a world champion!”
