VP-elect CP Radhakrishnan on Friday took oath as the 15th Vice President of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Radhakrishnan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Senior leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Former vice presidents Jagdeep Dhankhar, Venkaiah Naidu and Hamid Ansari also attended the ceremony.
67-year-old Radhakrishnan won the vice presidential election, defeating Opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes on September 9.
BJP national president JP last month announced CP Radhakrishnan as the NDA candidate for the Vice-Presidential election. The BJP Parliamentary Board held a meeting at the party headquarters, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other board members.
Nadda said, “Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan will be the NDA’s candidate for the Vice-Presidential election.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan and wrote on X, ” In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised. He has done extensive work at the grassroots in Tamil Nadu. I am glad that the NDA family has decided to nominate him as the Vice Presidential candidate of our alliance.”
Radhakrishnan expressed his gratitude through a post on X, saying: “My heartfelt thanks to our beloved People’s leader our most respected Honourable Prime Minister Shri. @narendramodiJi , our beloved most respected Honourable Home Minister Shri. @AmitShahJi, our beloved most respected Honourable Central Minister and @BJP4India President Shri. @JPNaddaJi, our beloved most respected Honourable Parliamentary board members , our beloved most respected Honourable Central Ministers , our beloved most respected Honourable NDA partners for choosing me as their Vice Presidential Candidate. Who is CP Radhakrishnan?
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan previously served as the Governor of Maharashtra. He has also served Jharkhand in a similar capacity and held additional charge as Governor of Telangana from February 2023 to July 2024.
Radhakrishnan had earlier been the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president from 2004 to 2007. He has been associated with the RSS and the Jan Sangh since the age of 16. He was also the party’s Kerala in-charge from 2020 to 2022.
Born on October 20, 1957, in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur, Radhakrishnan won the Lok Sabha elections in 1998 and 1999 from the Coimbatore constituency.
The announcement of the vice-presidential candidate was made after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from his post on July 21, citing health reasons.
