Dehradun Cloudburst: A massive cloudburst hit Uttarakhand’s Karligarh Sahastradhara area on Monday night, causing widespread destruction. Several homes, shops, and hotels were severely damaged due to the flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rains. The consequences of the cloudburst extended beyond Sahastradhara, as debris reached near the IT Park in Dehradun, raising the water level of the Song River.
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the severity of the situation in a post on the social media platform X. In light of the situation, the local administration announced a holiday in all schools from Class 1 to 12 on Tuesday, September 16.
Amid the ongoing adverse conditions, the India Meteorological Department has predicted torrential rain in several districts. A red alert has been issued in Dehradun, warning of exceptionally intense showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The impact of the rain was evident as rivers, including Tamsa, Chandrabhaga, and Sahastradhara, were flooded. Videos showed 1-2 feet of debris being accumulated in the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Shivalinga complex, which was among the hardest-hit locations. The bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway was also severely damaged. The videos shared on social media showed widespread damage and chaos following the cloudburst.
