A civil service officer in Assam has been taken action against for amassing disproportionate assets. Nupur Borah, who entered the Assam Civil Services in 2019, was detained on Monday. Police recovered Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth about Rs 2 crore from her, while an additional Rs 10 lakh was seized from her rented house in Barpeta.
The raid was conducted by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell. According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Borah was under surveillance for the last six months after receiving complaints. Born in Golaghat in 1989, Borah joined service as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong in 2019 and was posted as Circle Officer in Barpeta in 2023. A graduate in English literature, Nupur Borah has previously been a lecturer in DIET.
During her tenure in Barpeta, she was accused of transferring government and satra land to suspected illegal settlers (Miyan). Chief Minister Sarma said the official had given Hindu land to dubious persons in the Barpeta revenue circle for money.
Akhil Gogoi’s Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) had also earlier filed a complaint against Borah, accusing him of having a “rate card” of accepting bribes ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2 lakh for land services.
The case comes at a time when in another controversial case last year, bureaucrat Puja Khedkar was sacked from the IAS and found guilty of faking her identity to get extra chances in the exam, possessing assets worth Rs 22 crore, luxury cars, gold and diamonds.
