Leh Ladakh Protest Live Updates: The protest demanding statehood for Ladakh turned violent on Wednesday, with arson and street clashes leaving at least four dead and dozens injured, including 40 police personnel, officials said. Protesters set the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office, a police vehicle, and several private cars on fire. The unrest erupted during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which has been leading a five-year campaign demanding Ladakh’s statehood.
Later on Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry said the situation was under control and that no new incidents of violence had been reported after 4 pm. “Except for the regrettable incidents earlier in the day, the situation in Ladakh was brought under control by 4 pm,” the ministry noted.
Unrest has been growing in Ladakh against direct central rule over the past three years, with residents repeatedly demanding statehood and protections for their land, culture, and resources.
Ladakh became a separate Union Territory in August 2019, after Article 370 was revoked and the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated.
