Bhai Dooj 2025– Ritual

On this day, sisters bathe in the morning, take a vow to fast, invite their brother, and decorate a plate. After applying tilak to their brother, they tie a sacred thread and perform aarti. Afterward, the sister offers him sweets and food. The brother, according to his means, gifts his sister with clothes and money.

One reason Bhai Dooj is called Yama Dwitiya is that bathing in the river Yamuna on this day holds special significance in memory of the meeting of Yamraj and Yamuna. According to mythological beliefs, bathing in the Yamuna on this day absolves all sins and increases longevity and wealth. Taking a holy bath on this day prevents the Yamdoots from coming to take away a person’s life at the time of death.
