At least 36 people died and 40 were injured in a stampede-like incident caused by overcrowding at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s large public rally in Karur. The event, organized by Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), became chaotic as the crowd grew uncontrollable, prompting an official investigation into the tragedy. Vijay, along with his rally organisers, allegedly mobilised large crowds deliberately by delaying the event for several hours under the hot sun. DMK leaders called this a “cheap ploy” and accused them of criminal negligence.

Police reports stated that the stampede was triggered by a fall amid an uncontrollable surge of approximately 30,000 people.
It was already known that Vijay’s rallies typically draw large crowds, so this was not an unexpected situation. BJP leaders offered condolences and partly agreed with the criticism, noting that the organisers should have exercised greater caution.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin ordered immediate medical assistance and the restoration of order. Vijay’s immense popularity as an actor has earned him a massive and devoted fan base, which continues to drive the overwhelming turnout at his political events.
