Who Is Maithili Thakur? Bhojpuri singer once praised by PM Modi set to contest Bihar Elections News24 –


Maithili Thakur — a name set to resonate in the high-stakes Bihar Legislative Assembly election. Various reports said that she will be contesting from her home constituency Madhubani on BJP ticket. The rumours got backing after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in-charge for Bihar Vinod Tawde shared pictures of a meeting with Maithili and her father with Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in New Delhi.

Sharing the pictures on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tawde addressed Maithili as “Bihar’s daughter” and welcomed her back in the state.

Taking a dig at the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Tawde wrote, “The families that left Bihar after Lalu came into power in 1995, the daughter of that family, the renowned singer Maithili Thakur ji, wants to return to Bihar seeing the pace of changing Bihar.”

Responding to Tawde’s post, Thakur expressed gratitude, “The people who dream big for Bihar, every conversation with them reminds me of the power of vision and service. Honoured and grateful from the heart.”

Who is Maithili Thakur?

Maithili Thakur is a native of Benipatti in Bihar’s Madhubani district. She was named the ‘State Icon’ of Bihar by the Election Commission. She is a trained vocalist in Indian classical and folk music. She was honoured with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2021 for promoting Bihar’s folk traditions. The 25-year-old, along with her younger brothers, were trained by their grandfather and father in folk, Hindustani classical music, harmonium and tabla. She has rendered traditional folk songs of Bihar in Maithili, Bhojpuri and Hindi.
