Bhai Dooj 2025: On the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, people celebrate Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej, Bhai Tika, Bhai Phota, or Bhattri Dwitiya. The bond between brothers and sisters is honored during the celebration. On this day, brothers show their love and offer their sisters gifts, and sisters pray for their brothers’ long life, health, and wealth. The Dwitiya Tithi takes occur during the afternoon Aparahna window, which begins at 8:16 PM on October 22 and ends at 10:46 PM on October 23. However, the auspicious phase of the tilak will only last 135 minutes.

Bhai Dooj has profound religious importance in addition to being a cultural celebration. This day honors the tale of Lord Yama and his sister, Goddess Yamuna, in Hinduism. Sisters carry out rites to keep their brothers safe while calling out blessings for long life and joy.

This year, Bhai Dooj falls on Thursday, October 23, 2025, according to Drik Panchang:

Date: Thursday, October 23, 2025

SHUBH MUHARAT (Auspicious Time): 1:13 PM to 3:28 PM (135 Minutes Only)

TITHI YAMA DWITIYA: The Dwitiya Tithi begins on October 22 at 20:16 PM and ends on October 23 at 22:46 PM, but the specific tilak time falls within the afternoon Aparahna window.

Note: While the exact hour may vary slightly depending on the location, India follows the aforesaid timeframe. It is customary to give the Tika in the afternoon during Aparahna, the most fortunate time of the year.

Bhai Dooj: Rituals and Importance

Sisters take a bath and observe a fast, or Vrat, on Bhai Dooj, and they make a commitment to pray for their brothers’ welfare. They invite their brothers, do Aarti, and adorn the Thali (plate) with flowers, candies, and Tika. After the Tika is given to the brother, a ceremonial thread known as Kalava is placed around his wrist.

Bhai Dooj: An Expression of Love

Brothers give gifts like clothing, cash, or other expressions of affection, and sisters serve their brothers sweets and a special meal after the ceremonies. Bhai Dooj is not only a ritual for families. It represents sibling respect, affection, and obligation. The event is still widely celebrated throughout India despite its mythological origins, representing social ideals and familial ties.

Bhai Dooj encourages families to maintain their ties despite their hectic schedules by strengthening bonds via gift-giving and spiritual rituals. Additionally, the festival emphasizes how crucial customs are to preserving cultural history.
