IPL 2026: After a forgettable IPL 2025 campaign, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are gearing up for a crucial IPL 2026 trade and mini auction window. The 2024 champions endured a tough follow-up season, finishing eighth on the table with just five wins in 14 matches, a steep fall from their title-winning high.
The decision to release Shreyas Iyer and hand the captaincy to Ajinkya Rahane failed to pay off, while several key players, including Venkatesh Iyer, struggled for form. Now, as the November 15 retention deadline approaches, KKR are expected to keep their core group intact but will also look to refresh their squad smartly ahead of the December 13–15 mini auction.
Here’s a look at five players KKR might target during the IPL 2026 trade window and mini auction as they aim to return to championship contention.
Luke Wood
England’s Luke Wood could be a clever pick for KKR as they look to strengthen their pace attack. The left-armer has taken over 210 wickets in 199 T20 matches at an economy of 8.42, making him a reliable performer in franchise cricket.
Wood’s ability to swing the ball both ways, particularly back into right-handers, brings much-needed variation to the attack. Having played in top leagues such as the PSL, ILT20, and BBL, he also boasts valuable global experience. He had a short stint with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, picking up one wicket, and could now find a larger role at KKR – potentially replacing the underperforming Spencer Johnson.
Tom Banton
Once billed as England’s next T20 star, Tom Banton could be a handy signing for KKR in IPL 2026. The wicketkeeper-batter has rediscovered his rhythm across leagues like the ILT20 and Vitality Blast, scoring 4,700+ T20 runs at a 143.74 strike rate.
With both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock underwhelming last season, KKR may opt for a fresh start behind the stumps. Banton’s ability to attack spin and accelerate in the middle overs makes him an attractive option. Interestingly, he’s no stranger to the KKR setup, having featured for the franchise back in 2020–21.
Prithvi Shaw
After going unsold in IPL 2025, Prithvi Shaw has revived his form in domestic cricket, smashing back-to-back centuries in the Buchi Babu Tournament and other local competitions. With KKR struggling for consistent starts from their openers last season, Shaw’s attacking intent could fill a major gap.
The 25-year-old has scored 1,892 IPL runs at a strike rate above 147, proving he can dominate the powerplay. With Ajinkya Rahane’s future uncertain, KKR may look to pair Shaw with another aggressive opener to reset their top order.
Cameron Green
As Andre Russell enters the final phase of his career, KKR might be eyeing Cameron Green as their next marquee all-rounder. The Australian powerhouse has already showcased his talent with RCB and MI, scoring 707 runs and taking 16 wickets across 29 IPL games.
If KKR decide to release big contracts like Venkatesh Iyer and Anrich Nortje, they could free up nearly ₹30 crore, allowing them to make a serious bid for Green. His ability to bat in multiple positions and deliver crucial overs makes him a natural fit for KKR’s next-generation core.
Sanju Samson
Perhaps the most ambitious move on KKR’s radar could be Sanju Samson. Reports suggest the Rajasthan Royals captain has formally requested to be released, sparking widespread speculation about his future.
KKR are believed to be searching for a long-term Indian captain, and Samson’s experience and calm leadership make him a perfect candidate. His dual role as a top-order batter and wicketkeeper would also solve multiple selection issues for the team.
With both Gurbaz and de Kock underperforming, Samson’s addition would not only bolster the batting but also bring much-needed stability to the franchise’s leadership structure.
KKR’s 2026 Vision
The IPL 2026 trade window presents KKR with a golden chance to reset. With a mix of experienced campaigners and fresh Indian talent on their radar, the franchise appears intent on building a side that can sustain success beyond one great season.
After the missteps of 2025, the focus now shifts to strategic rebuilding, smart trades, and getting the right balance between youth and experience. If they execute their plans well, the Knight Riders could once again be genuine title contenders in IPL 2026.
