Shreyas Iyer suffers internal bleeding, immediately admitted in ICU, Report reveals ‘Could have been fatal’ News24 –

India’s ODI vice captain sustained a severe injury in third ODI against Australia while taking a catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Initially it was detected that he has hurt his left rib but now a report by PTI mentioned that an internal bleeding was detected and he has been immediately rushed to the hospital.

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately.

“He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding,” a source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.

The 31-year old batter took a magnificent catch running backwards and dismissed Alex Carey but as soon as he landed on ground he hurt his left rib and the injury turned about to be very serious. He was recently made the vice-captain of India in ODI format after he opted for a break from red-ball cricket as he is already struggling with back issues. This new injury again comes as a big concern, considering India will be playing three-match ODI series against South Africa starting from November 30.
