Cyclone Montha Alert! Severe Storm to Intensify by Oct 28; IMD Issues Warning for Andhra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu News24 –


Cyclone Montha: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday warned that the Cyclonic Storm Montha over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by the morning of Tuesday, October 28. The storm is likely to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam (near Kakinada) by the evening or night of Tuesday, bringing winds of 90-100 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h.

In view of the approaching cyclone Montha, the IMD has issued rainfall alert in coastal areas, Odisha, and southern states including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The IMD has warned of maximum sustained winds of 90-100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h during the cyclonic storm.Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh from October 27-29, Odisha on 28-29, and Chhattisgarh on October 28, due to the cyclone system.

Speaking to ANI, Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD, Bhubaneswar, stated that the cyclone is expected to intensify by Tuesday morning. It is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada during the evening or night of October 28.  As a result of this, Odisha is expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next 2-3 days, and residents are advised to stay alert and follow official updates.

Duty officer at Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre Jagannath Kumar stated that thunderstorms have been forecast over the next five days in Andhra Pradesh, with heavy rainfall expected in coastal districts. He informed that conditions are likely to ease after October 29. The IMD has strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea over the next five days due to hazardous weather.

“Yesterday’s deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclone Montha at 23:30 IST… As of today, it lies over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal… Its current position is approximately 520 km east of Chennai, 500 km southeast of Kakinada, 600 km southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 750 km from Gopalpur… The cyclone is likely to move northwest and intensify into a severe cyclone by tomorrow morning, 28 October. It is expected to cross Machilipatnam,” Kumar added.

As southern peninsula and coastal areas are expected to be impacted by the cyclone, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain, accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning at over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Ghat areas of Tirunelveli district; Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Theni, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts.

In view of the adverse weather conditions, residents are advised to stay alert, follow official updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The IMD has advised citizens in vulnerable areas to stay informed through official alerts, follow evacuation advisories, secure property, and avoid coastal zones during warnings.
