Cyclone Montha: The landfall process of the severe cyclonic storm Montha has commenced on Tuesday and is expected to continue over the next few hours. The India Meteorological Department confirmed the development, stating that the storm will soon cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada.
In a post on X, the IMD stated that cyclone Montha is continuously moving north-northwestwards and is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, within the next 3 to 4 hours. The storm is likely to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall have been predicted in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, South Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

Cyclone Montha: Odisha on Alert
Meanwhile, Chilika Lake became turbulent in Khordha district of Odisha on Tuesday, due to weather changes caused by Cyclone Montha. Odisha is on high alert and bracing for the effect of the cyclonic storm.Odisha Minister for Revenue & Disaster Management, Suresh Pujari said, “We have been having meetings with various officials. Today the Chief Minister also chaired a meeting in this regard. All types of facilities will be made available for persons who will be evacuated during heavy rain. We are ready to face any situation.”
Cyclone Montha: Andhra Pradesh on High Alert!
The IMD has issued a 10th number red warning for the Kakinada port. For the remaining ports, such as Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, and Machilipatnam, a 9th number warning has been issued. Earlier, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Commandant Gyaneshwar Singh stated that the team is on alert and monitoring the development. He informed that 26 teams have been deployed in active ops, while 19 teams are in reserve.
“NDRF has been on alert since the formation of Cyclone ‘Montha,’ and we are monitoring the bulletins issued by the IMD. As per the latest trends, the movement speed has slowed a bit. However, the current gusty winds are flowing at around 90 to 110 kmph, moving north-northwestwards, and are likely to strike the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Total, our 26 teams are deployed in active ops, and we have around 19 teams in reserve,” Singh added.

Cyclone Montha: Trains & Flights Cancelled
In the wake of SCS Montha, over 35 flights between Shamshabad in Telangana and Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Rajahmundry airports in Andhra Pradesh have been cancelled, GMR Airports said. A total of 30 IndiGo, two Air India and five Air India Express flights have been cancelled. The South Central Railway has also cancelled several train services, keeping passenger safety as the top priority. In an official release, the SCR notified the list of cancelled trains on October 28 and October 29, 2025. A total of 67 trains have been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
According to the IMD, Severe cyclonic storms carry immense destructive power. Strong winds, torrential rains, and storm surges can uproot lives in moments. Therefore, the citizens in vulnerable areas have been urged to stay informed through IMD official alerts, follow evacuation advisories, secure property, and avoid coastal zones during warnings.
