Yamuna’s water quality improves post-floods, pollution is now…. News24 –

Delhi News: The water level and quality of the river Yamuna are always closely monitored in the national capital. After the recent floods, the river’s level has decreased, and water samples indicate that while pollution increased in October compared to September, the current water quality is better than that recorded earlier, showing signs of improvement following the floods.

According to reports, samples taken during the September floods showed that the river was relatively clean and close to standard water quality. However, samples collected on October 9 and October 20 indicated higher pollution levels. The October 9 sample was taken after Durga Puja immersions, while the October 20 sample was part of regular monitoring before Chhath festivities. Pollution was higher in the October 20 sample compared to October 9. Despite these increases, the Yamuna is currently much less polluted than during the peak flood period.

Sampling reports indicated rising contamination

The level of Ammoniacal nitrogen at the Okhla Barrage Agra Canal was 0.88 mg per litre in September. It increased to 1.82 mg per litre in the October 9th report. Due to flooding, testing at Asgarpur was not conducted in September. However, the level at Asgarpur was 1.4 mg per litre in the September 9th report, which increased to 2.30 mg per litre in the October 20th sampling report, NBT reported. In most locations, the level was elevated in the October 20th sampling report.

Dissolved oxygen levels

Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels ranged from zero to 7.6 mg per litre in the October 9 report, while the standard is 5 mg per litre or more. At Asgarpur, the level remained zero after the Shahdara and Tughlakabad drains were converged. This means there was no oxygen in the Yamuna water at this point. DO levels in the Yamuna ranged from 3.7 to 9.5 mg per litre. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the amount of oxygen that is present in water and considered crucial for aquatic life to breathe.

Delhi Minister promises clean river in three years

Meanwhile, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Monday asserted that the Yamuna will be clean and free-flowing within the next three years. While speaking at Yamunotsav 2025, he assured the Delhi Government is working on a large scale and receiving full support from the Centre on this project. “

“This promise is not just a claim. It is backed by faith and commitment. We have the full budget support from the central Government and the strong leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Officers are working day and night. Every Delhiite’s dream of a clean Yamuna will soon become reality,” Singh stated.
