In a major breakthrough, the joint security forces arrested Irfan Ahmad Wagay, an imam from South Kashmir’s Shopian district in connection with the Faridabad explosive case. Wagay was considered as a key figure of “white collar” terror module after the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) in coordination with Srinagar Police seized devices from Wagay’s residence.

Who is Irfan Ahmed Wagay?

Irfan Ahmad Wagay, who is also known as Imam Irfan, is believed to be the mastermind behind a ‘white-collar’ terrorist module. Wagay allegedly radicalised medical professionals and students, reportedly linked to Pakistan-based terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH).

Wagay accused of extremist videos to students

Wagay, a former paramedic at Government Medical College, Srinagar, and an imam at a mosque in Nowgam, allegedly used his access within the medical community to build and expand the network, intelligence sources revealed. He is accused of showing extremist videos inspired by Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) to students and maintaining communication with his handlers in Afghanistan through VOIP.

Wagay allegedly raised funds through charitable and social welfare activities, and then the funds were used for logistics, procurement of weapons, and assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Wagay’s family member detained for interrogation

Beside this, a female member of Wagay’s family was detained by the security forces for interrogation. An inquiry was also being done about his brother who is employed with Jammu and Kashmir police.
