Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs J&K Division Prashant Lokhande on Saturday briefed on the massive accidental explosion that occurred inside the Nowgam Police Station late on November 14 around 11:20 pm. The official confirmed that the blast took place during the handling of a large cache of explosive substances and chemicals recovered in the investigation of a recently busted terror module. The powerful blast claimed nine lives and left several police personnel, revenue officials and civilians injured.
Nowgam Blast: Probe launched
The official added that despite being stored securely and processed under expert supervision as per standard procedures, the unstable nature of the materials led to the tragic incident. He stated that the government has launched a probe into the cause while urging people to avoid speculation and expressing solidarity with the families of the victims. Lokhande mentioned that the police station building has received severe damages and cause of the incident is being investigated.
What did the official say?
“Yesterday, on 14th November at 11:20 PM, in an unfortunate accidental incident, a massive explosion took place inside the Nowgam Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir. The Nowgam police cracked the case of a terror module… During the investigation of FIR 162 of 2025, a huge cache of explosive substances and chemicals were recovered. The recovery was kept securely in an open area of the police station. All the agencies involved in the investigation are working together in a coordinated and scientific manner,” he stated.
Briefing how the incident infolded, Lokhande said, “As a part of standard and prescribed procedure, the recovered chemical and explosive samples were being forwarded for further forensic and chemical examination. Due to voluminous recovery, the process was continuously attended for about last 2 days by following the said SOP. Owing to unstable and sensitive nature of the recovery, it was being handled very carefully under the expert supervision. However, during the process, an accidental explosion took place at about 11.20 PM yesterday night.”
“In this unfortunate accidental incident, 9 people have lost their lives whereas 27 police personnel, 2 revenue officials and 3 civilians have received injuries. The injured were immediately rushed to medical care and attention. The building of the police station has received severe damages… The cause of the incident is being investigated however, any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary. The government stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased,” he added.
