The BCCI has delayed discussions about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI roles for far too long. Following the South Africa series, the board is finally calling a meeting in Ahmedabad to clarify the future of these two senior stalwarts until the 2027 World Cup. Despite being central figures in Indian cricket for over a decade, neither Rohit nor Kohli has received a clear briefing on their roles for the next cycle.

Selectors Want Decisions

Inside the board, frustration is building. The selectors are done with confusion. They want a solid plan, not this ‘we’ll see later’ nonsense. A senior BCCI figure has already made it clear that players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature need clear roles, or the team will keep struggling. On the other hand, Rohit has been told to shut out the noise, stop reacting to outside chatter and simply prove his standing on the field. In other words, no more emotional drama but just performance.

India’s ODI Preparation Looks Weak?

The bigger issue ? There’s worry within the team management about the broader preparedness of the ODI squad. India rarely gets long reset periods because of the packed cricket calendar, which affects their ability to start strongly in each new series.

The Australia ODIs already highlighted this weakness, the team was weak early on, allowed the opposition to control the opening phase and only looked settled later in the game. The management is aware that this pattern cannot continue if the team wants to build a solid core for the next World Cup cycle.

Rohit’s Cautious Batting Isn’t Helping

Rohit’s approach is another point of concern. When he plays bold and aggressive, India dominates. When he goes into ‘safe mode’, the whole batting order collapses into uncertainty. Recently, he’s been too careful at the top, especially in the Australia series, and that completely kills momentum. The team wants the old Rohit back, the one who throws the first punch, not the one who waits for the bowl to come to him. Without that, the younger players don’t get the platform they need.

Skipping Key Matches Has Hurt Both Rohit and Kohli

Another problem the board won’t say publicly is that both Rohit and Kohli skipping cricket in England during the summer annoyed the selectors.Those matches could’ve sharpened their game. Instead, they showed up underprepared.

Now they’re being pushed to play Vijay Hazare Trophy next month, whether they like it or not. India has another three match ODI series next month and the England ODI series in July is going to be a make or break test and  not just for them, but for the BCCI’s entire 2027 plan.
