Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Commuters to drive above 14 km wildlife underpass, home to tigers, elephants
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: There is some good news for commuters as the new expressway, which connects Delhi to Dehradun, is set to open soon. Trial operations have already started on two completed sections of the 210-km-long stretch. After being open to the public, the expressway will slash travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from 6 hours to just 2.5 hours.
When will remaining sections of Delhi-Dehradun expressway epen?
The road links the Akshardham area in East Delhi to Khekra near the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. According to the National Highways Authority of India, the remaining four sections of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway are estimated to open in January 2026. The mentioned sections pass through Roorkee, Saharanpur, and Meerut, covering the entire route.
Minimum speed for driving set at…
The new expressway will reduce the distance between the two key cities from 235 km to 210 km. The stretch is designed for driving at a minimum 100 Km/hr speed. Moreover, every 25-30 kilometers has been provisioned for enhancing the road user experience. The first 18 km of the expressway stretching from Akshardham Temple to Loni will be toll-free.
Remaining sections overview
The expressway will enter Dehradun through Biharigarh, Ganeshpur, and Asharodi. The remaining sections of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway are:
- 27 km from Khekra to Lohadda village
- 30 km from Lohadda to Karaunda Mahajan village
- 26 km from Karaunda Mahajan to Khyawari village,
- 37 km from Khyawari to Latifpur village near the Saharanpur bypass
14-km wildlife underpass
An interesting feature of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway is that it will have Asia’s largest wildlife elevated corridor of up to 14 Km for unrestricted wildlife movement. As the road has been built along the Rajaji National Park, which is home to tigers, wild boar, elephants, leopards, deer, and other animals.
Cost of building Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
The total cost of building the greenfield expressway is around Rs 12,000 crore. The stretch includes 113 vehicular underpasses, 76 km service roads, 62 bus shelters, 12 wayside amenities, and 16 entry points.
