International Cricket Council (ICC) president Jay Shah heaped huge praise of former India captain Rohit Sharma. The former BCCI secretary addressed him as the “captain” during a recent event – this was because Rohit has led India and won two big ICC titles for the country.
The video of Jay Shah praising Rohit Sharma has gone viral and created a buzz on social media. Recently, Rohit Sharma was replaced as the Indian captain by Shubman Gill who now leads India in ODI and Tests format.
“Our captain is sitting here. I will call him captain only, as he has led the team to two ICC trophies. During the 2023 World Cup, after winning ten successive matches, we could only win hearts but could not lift the trophy,” Jay Shah said at the United in Triumph event.
“In February 2024, I had said in Rajkot that in the next World Cup, we will win both hearts and the cup,” Shah mentioned.
Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal as Indian captain he won back-to-back titles – the T20 World Cup 2024 and then he won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After winning the World Cup in 2024, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20Is and in May 2025 he retired from the Test format as well.
Now in 2026, Rohit Sharma will be playing the first ODI series of the year against New Zealand with the first match scheduled to be played on January 11 in Vadodara.
