WWE: Adam Copeland reflects on iconic Money in the Bank cash-in that made Edge champion

Adam Copeland recently made headlines after signing with AEW, but he also took time to reflect on his celebrated WWE past as Edge. For the majority of his professional wrestling career, Copeland was known worldwide as the “Rated R Superstar,” a WWE Hall of Famer and one of the most accomplished performers in company history.

Over a legendary career, Edge captured 11 WWE World Championships and won more than 30 titles overall, cementing his status as one of the greatest superstars of all time.

Former Edge Looks Back on Iconic WWE Moment Amid AEW Absence

In 2023, following the expiration of his WWE contract, Copeland officially closed the chapter on a remarkable 25-year run with the company. He made his AEW debut in October 2023, working regularly despite suffering serious injuries that led to long periods away from the ring.

While the Edge persona remains exclusive to WWE, Copeland continues to carve out his own identity in AEW. Even so, he recently looked back fondly on a defining WWE moment that took place 20 years ago, sharing memories from January 8 that shaped the course of his career.

The Birth of the Ultimate Opportunist at New Year’s Revolution

At WWE New Year’s Revolution 2006, Edge—accompanied by Lita—famously cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on John Cena to win his first-ever WWE Championship. Although Edge initially won the inaugural Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, he carried the briefcase for nearly a full year before cashing it in at the perfect moment.

That night marked the birth of the “Ultimate Opportunist” and changed Edge’s career forever.

Adam Copeland Revisits New Year’s Revolution 2006

Taking to Instagram, Adam Copeland reflected on the milestone, describing New Year’s Revolution 2006 as the moment his lifelong dream became reality.

“It was 20 years ago today… that I used this beat-up briefcase that I’d carried for almost an entire year to win my first World Championship. A day I’ll never forget. MITB changed the entire trajectory of my career and made this kid’s dream come true. Never stop dreamin’.”

Iconic Briefcase Sparks Nostalgia as Copeland Works on New Project

Alongside the message, Copeland shared a photo of the original, battered black Money in the Bank briefcase, instantly triggering nostalgia among wrestling fans.

Copeland has not appeared on AEW television since September. AEW president Tony Khan has since confirmed that the veteran star is currently busy filming a non-wrestling project, explaining his absence from programming.
