Steve Smith set to make BIG move after getting DROPPED by Australia for T20 World Cup 2026, eyes for…
Australian batting star Steve Smith has accepted that he was left out of Australia’s preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup, but he is still determined to play international T20 cricket. He remains focused on representing Australia at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
What was Steve Smith’s reaction to getting dropped from Australia for the T20 World Cup 2026?
The 38-year-old who is playing very well in the current Big Bash League (BBL), admitted that despite some great performances, his selection for the national T20 squad was never expected. The former Australia captain has not given up on T20 International cricket and is still targeting a chance to play at the Olympics, where cricket will return after a long gap.
What was Steve Smith’s statement?
“I always want to play for Australia in big tournaments. But I think that ship’s sailed. I reckon they’ve got two opening batters that are doing pretty well. I’m relaxed doing what I can here and having some fun,” Smith was quoted as saying by Espncricinfo.
“My main goal, as I’ve said before, is to get in the team when the Olympics is rolling around. I’d be keen to do that. That’d be pretty cool. Keep doing what I’m doing and you never know,” he added.
How is Steve Smith doing in T20S?
Steve Smith last played a T20 International for Australia in February 2024. Since then, he has scored at an average of over 51 with a strike rate of 156 in T20 matches.
The Australian star has been in excellent form in BBL 2025-26. Returning to his team, the Sydney Sixers, after the Ashes, Smith has made 173 runs in just three games. He also scored a century off 41 balls against the Sydney Thunder at the SCG on January 16.
Thanks to Steve Smith’s big-hitting, the Sixers are in a strong position to make it to the final. After the BBL, Smith will continue playing T20 cricket in Major League Cricket, which will take place in the USA in June and July.
