Shubman Gill fails twice, India’s Test and ODI captain faces Ranji Trophy horror with…

Shubman Gill could not perform well with the bat in his comeback to the Ranji Trophy. He is leading Punjab as captain in the Elite Group B match of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy against Saurashtra at Niranjan Shah Stadium C in Rajkot.

A lot was expected from Shubman Gill

As India’s Test and ODI captain, a lot was expected from Shubman Gill in Punjab’s important match against Saurashtra. However, the right-handed batter could not perform well and failed to score in both innings against Jaydev Unadkat’s Saurashtra team.

Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply in the same way in both innings

Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply in the same way in both innings, with Parth Bhut getting him out lbw each time. It was a disappointing match for Gill, who had hoped to make a strong return after a mediocre ODI series against New Zealand at home.

After being left out of India’s T20I team, Shubman Gill struggled against spin in the Ranji Trophy match. In the first innings on January 22, the 26-year-old scored zero at No. 5, getting out lbw to left-arm spinner Parth Bhut after facing only two balls.

What happened in the second innings?

In the second innings the next day, Punjab needed 320 runs on a turning pitch. Gill came in at No. 4 and tried to build a partnership with Uday Saharan. He managed one boundary but was soon dismissed by the Saurashtra bowlers.

Once more, Parth Bhut got the upper hand over the Indian star. Gill was dismissed lbw for 14 runs off 32 balls in the second innings while attempting a sweep shot against Saurashtra in Rajkot. His wicket triggered a batting collapse, as Punjab lost five wickets for only 13 runs, with Bhut and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja bowling well for Saurashtra in their Ranji Trophy match at Niranjan Shah Stadium C.

How is Shubman Gill going?

Shubman Gill is going through a difficult time in his career. His ODI captaincy started with a poor series in Australia, followed by injury problems, and then he was left out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

His form has dropped a lot, scoring just 196 runs in his last ten innings across the T20I series in South Africa, the ODI series against New Zealand, and domestic games for Punjab. He made only two fifties against New Zealand, which is the only positive.
