Food vendor abducts woman, shoves her into Scorpio, flees when vehicle gets stuck in mud

Gurgaon: In a shocking incident that took place in the early hours of Sunday, a 25-year-old food vendor abducted a woman from Leopard Trail in Aravalis and drove around the city after shoving her into a borrowed Scorpio. According to reports, the seller, identified as Gaurav Bhati, was arrested in Gurgaon. He abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene when one of the tyres was stuck in mud, an hour after the kidnapping.

What exactly happened?

Late on Saturday, the woman, along with her colleague, had driven to Leopard Trail in the Aravali area. After spending around 1.5 hours there, the duo was allegedly harassed by the accused while they were inside their car. When they confronted Bhati, an altercation broke out between them, following which he reportedly snatched the woman’s phone and rushed towards his Scorpio.

When the woman chased him, he grabbed and shoved her into the SUV and drove around the city with police in pursuit, sources said. Her colleague immediately alerted the police and shared details of Bhati’s car, which helped police track him down.

Bhati drove the SUV to random locations, including Southern Peripheral Road, Sector 74, and Subhash Chowk. After that, he took the woman to a secluded, hilly forested area, but the car, which he had borrowed from another food seller, stalled mid-way, making him flee the scene.

Bhati borrowed the car from another food vendor

Later, the police reached the crime scene and rescued the victim. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle’s registration details led them to its owner, who informed cops that Bhati had borrowed it to buy liquor.

A team of cops traced and arrested Bhati within a few hours. “A medical examination confirmed that the accused was intoxicated at the time of the crime. When Bhati was taken back to the hills for a recreation of the crime scene, he attempted to escape. During the bid to flee, he tripped and fell in the rugged terrain, resulting in a fracture to his right leg and injuries to the face. He was hospitalised under custody,” TOI quoted a police officer as saying.

Bhati remains in police custody

An FIR has been registered against the accused under section 137(2) for kidnapping and section 304(2) for snatching of the BNS. Bhati currently remains in custody with kidnapping and snatching charges. Meanwhile, the Police are awaiting the victim’s magisterial statement before adding sexual assault charges, reports added.
