Mbappe just one goal away from breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary Champions League record

Ronaldo still remains as one of the most prominent and a record holder in his former club Real Madrid be it his records he made in Champions League or La Liga. But now a young talent is on the verge of breaking one of his Champions League records. Since his 2024 arrival, Kylian Mbappé’s been on a tear, already bagging the most goals in a debut season and a calendar year for the club. Now, he’s just one goal shy of eclipsing CR7’s league phase record.

Mbappe poised to add another landmark to his growing legacy

Mbappe has scored 34 goals for the Spanish team during the 2025-26 season which includes 11 goals he achieved in the Champions League. Ronaldo is the only other player to ever reach that milestone before the knockout rounds, holding on to his record-11 goals in the group stage for the last decade. The last league match for Los Blancos gives Mbappé a chance to break another record which will add to his historical achievements that already build his impressive career.

The group stage that cemented Ronaldo’s Champions League legacy

Ronaldo achieved one of his best performances in the 2015-16 Champions League group stage which stands as his greatest accomplishment in the history of the tournament. The Real Madrid icon scored an incredible 11 goals in just six matches, a record that still stands today. Ronaldo scored 11 goals through his four matches after he failed to score in his two games against PSG.

He began his scoring with three goals against Shakhtar Donetsk and then added two more goals against Malmo and two additional goals in his second match against Shakhtar and he completed his total of four goals at the Bernabeu against Malmo. The Madrid team won the championship that year which did not surprise anyone.

French star closes in on Ronaldo’s legendary European record

Mbappe needs to score more goals than Ronaldo’s group-stage record for his actual objective which he wants to achieve. Ronaldo’s 17 goals during Real Madrid’s 2013-14 Champions League victory stand as the ultimate achievement. The knockout round begins when Mbappe needs to score six additional goals to achieve his target. The French player will receive multiple opportunities to play if Madrid progresses through the tournament according to his physical condition and the team’s performance.
