Sri Lanka is getting ready for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which it will co-host with India, by introducing strong security measures and improving facilities ahead of the important tournament.
Sri Lanka will host the India vs Pakistan match in Colombo
Sri Lanka will host 20 matches from February 7 to March 8, with the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan game set for February 15 in Colombo. Because of the importance of matches between these two teams, Sri Lankan officials are making security a top priority.
Safety of players, officials and fans will be the main focus
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the safety of players, officials and fans will be the main focus during the tournament. Reports say that elite commando units, usually used to protect visiting leaders, will be assigned to the event. They will provide 24/7 security, accompanying teams from the airport to their matches and back after the games.
Players will be kept safe at all times, including while traveling, staying at hotels, practicing, and on match days. Extra safety measures will be in place for India-Pakistan games, which are often intense because of the long-standing political tensions between the two nations.
Sri Lanka is using the World Cup to upgrade its cricket stadiums
Along with security arrangements, Sri Lanka is using the World Cup to upgrade its cricket stadiums. The Singhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo now has new floodlights and the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy is fully prepared to host matches.
On the diplomatic side, Sri Lanka Cricket has decided not to speak about the current issues between the ICC and Bangladesh. Even though there are reports that Pakistan might skip the tournament to support Bangladesh, SLC has stayed neutral.
