Just before the start of the T20 World Cup 2026, the excitement of cricket has spilled from the field onto social media. Following Pakistan’s victory over Australia in the first T20I, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif openly praised the team and the PCB leadership, but his post sparked a debate. Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reacted sharply, questioning the significance of the win and further intensifying the online discussion.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s congratulatory message becomes the center of attention
After the victory in the first T20I of the series against Australia, Shehbaz Sharif posted on X (formerly Twitter), praising the Pakistan team. He called the performance of the team, led by captain Salman Ali Agha, a “moment of pride” and also appreciated the efforts of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his team. The post was intended to boost team morale, but it became a subject of debate on social media.
Questions raised about Australia’s weakened team
Australia fielded a team without its key players in this match. Big names like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, and Nathan Ellis were absent due to fitness and workload management. Regular captain Mitchell Marsh was also unavailable, so Travis Head led the team. This fact became the basis of the criticism.
Aakash Chopra’s direct response
Reacting to Sharif’s post, Aakash Chopra said that it was a bilateral series against Australia’s B team, so calling it “electrifying” was an exaggeration. He also added that calling a 22-run victory, achieved by restricting the opposition to 146/8 in response to 168/8, a great achievement was not appropriate.
